Sign of decency hard to find at Dumas business
Shortly after Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., called President Barack Obama a liar during a speech before Congress, a sign went up in front of an auto repair shop on East First Street in Dumas.
A-1 AutoCare owner Sweetie Green said he put the sign up for a month because he agrees with Wilson, but he has since taken the sign down.
“It was right after that happened,†Green said, adding later that he believes Obama has lied.
He said he has gotten two complaints about the sign, one from Sunray, another from Dumas. But he’s also gotten support for expressing his sentiments in this manner.
“I’ve had, gosh, I don’t know how many people have called from different states thanking me for putting it up, expressing my opinion and all that,†he said. “It all boiled down to when that guy’s calling the president a liar.â€
Green said he wasn’t a racist. “I don’t have nothing (sic) to do with that.â€
Calling a politician a liar isn’t wrong. Being racist about it is and that’s how the sign strikes us.
The people of the Texas Panhandle pride themselves on their decency.
We are certain that Mr. Green’s expression doesn’t reflect that decency.
